Impassioned Politics

I was simply amazed at the footage of yesterday’s Senate Foreign Relations meeting, at which the committee took up debate on the non-binding resolution opposing the ridiculous “surge” of US troops being sent to Iraq.

Senator Chuck Hagel, a Republican from Nebraska, gave a passionate plea in support of the importance of debating this issue.

Hagel said:

We better be damn sure we know what we’re doing, all of us, before we put 22,000 more Americans into that grinder.

This was one of the most compelling, honest, passionate pleas I have seen from any politician – Republican or Democrat – in a long time.

Sen. Hagel was the only Republican who “crossed the aisle” and voted to send the resolution to the Senate for a vote. He is to be commended for his leadership, common sense, and intelligence.

Well done.

  1. Shouldn’t all the senators have known damn well what they were doing before they sent the first troop?

  2. Absolutely. It’s just a rarity, in my opinion, to hear any of these Senators – especially a Republican – say that outloud.

  3. I could not agree more. I was moved by Hagel’s passion. It’s refreshing to see any emotion from a politican- especially when they are deciding how many Amercian military lives should be put in danger.
